I am so excited to tell you about the Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (M.I.T.E.S.) program which is a free six-week program at M.I.T. for rising high school seniors from disadvantaged backgrounds.

These types of summer programs increase our kids’ confidence because when they do go on to college, they will already have some familiarity with challenging S.T.E.M. materials.
The best part is that everything is paid for except for transportation to and from the school. Here’s a description of the program:

Through the MITES (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science) program OEOP offers three rigorous residential and on-line, academic enrichment programs for promising high school juniors who are interested in studying and exploring careers in science and engineering. These national programs stress the value and reward of pursuing advanced technical degrees and careers while developing the skills necessary to achieve success in science and engineering. The programs are rooted in MIT’s belief in the importance of students from diverse populations to pursue higher education and careers in these fields.

Selected students build self-confidence in their ability to be successful in a demanding academic atmosphere, and have a chance to work with and befriend individuals of different racial, ethnic and other backgrounds. Although admission to MIT is not the focus of our programs, for our graduates, there is a strong record of successful admission to MIT and to other engineering and science universities.

As I’ve mentioned before, we are underrepresented in S.T.E.M. fields so please pass on this post so we can get our kids into the sciences.
